Washington hands Purdue first loss

HOUSTON, Tx. (WLFI) - Washington proved too much for the Boilermakers as they handed Purdue their first loss of 2012 via sweep. The Huskies won the match 25-21, 25-17, 25-9.

Senior Ariel Turner and sophomore Val Nichol led Purdue offensively with six kills apiece, while sophomore Kiki Jones added five putaways. Turner and redshirt junior Rachel Davis each served up two aces to aid the Boilermaker cause.

Redshirt junior Carly Cramer paced the team defensively with 12 digs, while Turner added eight and redshirt senior Amanda Miller chipped in six.

Washington topped Purdue in every statistical category, outhitting the Boilers .346 to -.012 and outblocking them 13.5 to 2.

The Boilermakers held a 17-15 lead in Set 1, but could not hold on, falling 25-21 to the Huskies in the first set. Purdue hit just .091 in the stanza. The Boilermakers trailed early but vaulted ahead 9-6 with a 4-1 rally. Redshirt junior Katie Griffin tallied two kills, Drewry and Rebarchak teamed up on a block and Davis served her first ace in the stretch. Washington eventually tied it up at 11 and took a 12-11 on a Purdue hitting miscue, prompting a timeout. After the break, the Boilermakers scored six of the next nine points, including kills by three different players and another Davis ace, to go up 17-15. The Huskies responded with a 4-0 run to take a 19-17 lead, one which they would not relinquish. Purdue narrowed the gap to one three times, but could not break through.

Washington carried the momentum into the second set, racing out to a 10-4 advantage and never looking back. Turner downed a kill and a solo block to pull the Boilermakers within six again at 14-8, but Purdue soon found itself down 18-10. Turner again tried to aid the team with a pair of aces, forcing a UW timeout at 18-12. The teams split the next 12 points, alternating scores en route to a 25-17 finish. The Huskies hit .636 in the second set, while holding Purdue t o a .048 effort. Nichol led the way with three kills.

The Huskies made quick work of the Boilermakers in Set 3, posting a 25-9 win, thanks in part to 6.5 blocks. Purdue tailed 5-1 early, but pulled within two at 6-4 after a Jones kill and a UW miscue. From there, it was nearly all Washington. The Boilermakers recorded just five kills in the set, two each from Jones and Turner and one by Rebarchak.
