Why Obama Is Wrong and Romney and Ryan Are ... - Yahoo! Finance

The House on Wednesday began debate on a variety of budget plans, including House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's, which cuts $5.3 trillion from government spending (including $810 billion from Medicaid) and cuts taxes by $2 trillion by lowering the top marginal tax rate to 25%.

Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has expressed support for the broad outlines of Rep. Ryan's plan. Romney wants to cut the top marginal tax rate to 20%, repeal the estate tax and Alternative Minimum Tax, cut government spending and reform entitlement programs.

"What both Rep. Ryan's and Gov. Romney's plans have in common is the notion of tax reform: broaden base and lower the rates, both corporate and individual," says Glenn Hubbard, Dean of Columbia Business School and
an economic adviser to Romney. "[Both] reduce growth in government spending, particularly in entitlement spending the two plans are very similar. If we don't do all that we're not going to be able to solve the fiscal crisis the country faces."

Like nearly all Republicans, Hubbard is adamantly opposed to President Obama budget, which calls for raising the top marginal tax rate to 39.6% from 35% today.

Hubbard, one of the architects of the so-called Bush Tax Cuts, says raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans is the wrong prescription, despite multiple polls showing support for it by the majority of Americans.

"What we should definitely not be doing is what the President proposed - raising marginal tax rates on higher income Americans, particularly business owners," Hubbard says. "We need to cut marginal rates for every American, it's not about the wealthiest and non-wealthy. We need to encourage work, encouraging saving, encourage entrepreneurship."

In addition, Hubbard says Obama's math just doesn't add up. The so-called Buffett Rule championed by the President, which would tax millionaires at a minimum rate of 30%, would only raise about $40 billion, a tiny drop in the nation's trillion-plus deficit.

Third Way Gets Left Behind

To listen to most politicians and pundits, the 2012 election is shaping up to be a election of stark choices between diametrically opposed viewpoints. To wit, House Speaker John Boehner called the Ryan plan "the only responsible budget in town" ahead of Wednesday's hearings.

But there's a third option which has some bipartisan support and actually reflects what polls say the majority of Americans want from Congress.

Based on the Simpson-Bowles plan, Reps. Steve LaTourette (R., Ohio) and Jim Cooper (D., Tenn.) proposed a plan to lower marginal tax rates but also eliminate or dramatically limit tax breaks, which typically benefit the wealthiest Americans most.

The LaTourette-Cooper plan would lower the deficit by $1 trillion in over 10 years via tax reform, as well as set limits on the long-term growth of federal health-care spending and seek to cut $300 billion in federal programs, such as agriculture and federal retirement benefits.

"The proposal would direct broader changes in Social Security and other entitlement programs than many Democrats have supported and larger increases in tax revenue than many Republicans have backed," according to The Wall Street Journal.

Sounds like a compromise, which is what voters say they want. The plan also has some bipartisan support -- at least 7 Republicans and 3 Democrats supported the plan, according to The WSJ -- which is another thing polls show Americans want.

"I don't agree with everything in Bowles-Simpson but it strikes me as exactly the right place to start," says Hubbard, who agrees both parties need to find common ground before the end of the year, when automatic spending cuts kick in and both the Bush tax cuts and Obama's temporary payroll tax cut are due to sunset.

"This isn't just political rhetoric: The two sides really have to come together," Hubbard says. "We don't know who the President is in 2013 or, which party controls the Congress. It's clear this President, if he's reelected, would have to change his style and actually produce a compromise tax plan and he'll have to do that next year."

Any hopes for compromise were dashed Wednesday, when the LaTourette-Cooper plan was "crushed," as Politico put it.
"You know you have a good deal when the left and right are beating the snot out of you," LaTourette said on the House floor. "The mood in the country is throw the bums out ? Americans are screaming for us to take off our red jerseys on this side, to take off the blue jerseys on that side, and put on the red white and blue jerseys of the United States of America."

Voters may be screaming for compromise -- and teamwork -- but the partisans in Washington keep turning a deaf ear.

As pressure builds, Santorum shows a dark side

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Rick Santorum began his presidential campaign by roaming Iowa in a pickup truck, boosted by peppy television ads that showed him walking through a garden with his wife and holding his youngest daughter.

Now, with his frustration apparently building over what he sees as slanted news coverage that favors Republican front-runner Mitt Romney, Santorum and his campaign are showing a dark side.

Over the weekend in Wisconsin, Santorum cursed at a New York Times reporter who the former Pennsylvania senator said had misinterpreted comments he had made about Romney.

And Santorum's campaign has released an online video that forecasts a looming apocalypse in small-town America if Democratic President Barack Obama is re-elected in November.

The stark and dramatic video, dubbed "Obamaville," (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDGORiD82rQ) portrays a nearly abandoned town with images of a child's shoe and an empty playground, a man holding a gas pump to his head, and an image of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that switches to one of Obama, then back to Ahmadinejad.

"Every day, the residents of this town must come to grips with the harsh reality that a rogue nation and sworn American enemy has become a nuclear threat," a narrator says. "Welcome to a place where one president's failed policies really hit home. Welcome to Obamaville."

The theatrics reflect how Santorum's campaign has become increasingly edgy as Romney has moved closer to the Republican nomination, and as party leaders' calls for the socially conservative Santorum to step aside have gotten louder.

On the campaign trail, Santorum wraps his speeches in somber warnings about Americans losing their freedom in Obama's America - particularly when it comes to the president's healthcare overhaul, whose requirement for Americans to buy health insurance is the focus of a case before the U.S. Supreme Court this week.

Santorum repeated such warnings on Monday outside the court's building in Washington.

His angst may be amplified by the calls for him to give Romney an unimpeded march to the Republican nomination, analysts said Monday.

"I think the math is catching up with (Santorum)," said Suffolk University pollster David Paleologos, referring to Romney's big lead in Republican convention delegates earned in the state-by-state race for the nomination.

Suffolk released a survey on Monday that showed rising unfavorability ratings for the Republican candidates as the campaign moves into April.

'TIME FOR SOMEBODY TO SCREAM'

Some Santorum supporters acknowledged that they see a measure of desperation in his recent tactics.

"When you're about to go over the cliff, it's time for somebody to holler and scream," said longtime conservative activist and Santorum supporter Richard Viguerie.

In Shreveport, Louisiana, last Friday, Santorum told supporters to "act ... as if your freedom is at stake, because it is."

Santorum underscored his campaign's claim that the United States is on the verge of national calamity by staging a recent party in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where Abraham Lincoln famously honored the Civil War's deadliest battle.

Santorum's crowds have had their dark moments, too.

As Santorum fired a pistol at a target in West Monroe, Louisiana, last week, a woman in the audience shouted, "Pretend it's Obama."

When told of the incident later, Santorum said, "That's a very horrible and terrible remark."

On Monday, Santorum defended his outburst at a New York Times reporter, which occurred after the reporter questioned him about a remark Santorum had made about Romney being "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama."

Santorum told the reporter, Jeff Zeleny, to "stop lying," said he had called Romney "the worst Republican to run on the issue of Obamacare," and then cursed at Zeleny.

The outburst itself became a campaign issue on Monday, as Santorum's campaign cited it as evidence of his toughness in battling Romney, who backed his own healthcare overhaul when he was governor of Massachusetts.

"I don't regret taking on a New York Times reporter who was out of line," Santorum said outside the Supreme Court. "If you're a conservative and you haven't taken on a New York Times reporter, you're not worth your salt as far as I'm concerned.

"We're going to stand up and fight," Santorum said. "We're going to go out and speak the truth."

Santorum's campaign sent out a fundraising letter that lauded him for confronting the Times reporter.

"Let me assure you, I didn't back down, and I didn't let him bully me," Santorum said in the letter. "I think it is high time that conservatives find the courage to expose the liberal press for what they are, a defender and enabler of Romney's and Obama's liberal agendas."

Romney's campaign, meanwhile, cast the incident as evidence that Santorum has a problem with his temper. Romney aides have posted messages on Twitter calling the former senator, "Tantorum."

That's not the first nickname that Santorum has picked up, poking fun at his temper. At Butler Senior High School in western Pennsylvania, Santorum was known as "Rooster." In the Senate, he was called "Senator Slash" for his aggressive style.

Former Senate colleague Bob Kerrey, a Democrat from Nebraska, once said that "Santorum" was Latin for an unprintable part of the anatomy.

Santorum's attacks on the media are popular among many of his supporters.

Some wear "Don't Believe the Liberal Media" buttons, provided by the press watchdog Media Research Center, to campaign events.

"You don't report the news," Ed Freers, 72, a retired jeweler told a reporter in Moline, Illinois, last week.

To many of his supporters, Santorum's tactics are those of a candidate who is playing to win, not make friends.

"When you've got a campaign that is in second place, I would not worry about making mistakes," said Viguerie, the conservative activist. "I would worry about not being bold."

Utter perfection: dainty sandwiches made of fragrant butter and crunchy sour cucumbers.

Sometimes the lack of a complicated recipe puts a block on all of my writing efforts. I wonder if it is necessary to share a sandwich recipe so simple that essentially it reads, bread, butter and cucumber ? assemble. These dainty finger sandwiches were first made by my friend Mel who lined them up on their edges to make a pattern of bread, bread, butter, cucumber, bread, bread, butter, cucumber?.

There are several versions of this composition by Mel?ndez and according to the Sotheby?s catalogue entry for this painting, ?The olive oil strainer, the jug of vinegar and the large alcorco?n bowl were evidently favoured possessions of the painter for they recur in numerous other works.?

Cucumber Finger Sandwiches

Yield: 36 finger sandwiches

1/2 cup white wine vinegar
?1/2 teaspoon salt
?1 Lebanese cucumber, thinly sliced
?250 grams butter (about 2 sticks), softened
?1/4 cup chopped herbs, a mixture of dill, parsley, chives, mint and coriander
?loaf of soft white bread
?sea salt

In a small bowl, add the vinegar, salt and cucumber slices. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, thoroughly mix the softened butter with the mixed herbs. Drain the cucumbers from the vinegar and begin to assemble the sandwiches. Spread a layer of butter, sprinkle over the sea salt and cover in one layer of cucumbers. Cut the crusts off the sandwich and slice into 3 to 4 long rectangles, depending on the size of the slice of bread.

Repeat until all of the ingredients have been used and serve. Can be made up to a day in advance.

Koreans lay down early marker to succeed Al Sadd

Kamoliddin Murzoev pulled one back in stoppage time for Bunyodkor but by then the Group E contest was already beyond reach.

And in the other Group F match, two first half goals for Ulsan Hyundai -- including a 25-yeard strike from midfielder Ko Seul-Ki -- were enough for victory over Beijing Guoan.

"It was our first home match this year and the players produced their best performance," said Ulsan coach Kim Ho-Gon, who saw his side beat the Steelers 1-0 in their K-League opener on Saturday.

Later on Tuesday Saudi Arabia's two-time champions Al Ittihad got their campaign off to an electrifying start in Group B with a 4-0 whipping of Uzbek giants Pakhtakor.

A double by the impressive Abdullah Abusabaan was the chief inspiration for the Saudi side though their cause was helped by the red card for Aleksandr Kletskov in the 37th minute just six minutes after he had picked up a yellow card.

The Skate-a-thon is a family-fun event. A bake sale starts at noon and 20% of all admissions to the ice rink for the entire day will be donated to Katy's Courage.
