HTC: Jelly Bean rolling out to global One X and One S this month

HTC: Jelly Bean rolling out to global One X and One S this month

Tucked away at the bottom of HTC's announcement of the One X+ is a pleasant piece of news that's sure to make One X and One S owners happy. Android 4.1, alongside HTC's Sense 4+ UI, is set to arrive on the devices at some point this month. As a disclaimer, this likely won't apply to AT&T's One X or T-Mobile's One S, since the refresh will likely take additional time to make its way through carrier testing -- HTC reps confirmed to us that the October timeframe is specifically for the global versions. Here's to hoping this doesn't mean we'll have to wait until the 31st to get our hands on Jelly Bean.

Need advice...am I the crazy one? | Step Talk

DH informed me over the weekend that BM of SD 8 and SS 6 had apparently been reminiscing with the children and watching old home movies from when they were still married (it's been 3 years since their divorce). BM said this made SD very upset, she cried and said she "just wanted her family back."

DH and I had no idea what to do. We agreed that we thought it was inappropriate for BM to watch those videos with the children, showing them a life that doesn't exist anymore...but I am torn.

He took SD 8 out on a walk yesterday afternoon to talk. He reiterated that she shouldn't be sad about seeing the videos because there was a lot of unhappiness and fighting that she didn't know about when her parents were married, and that she has a lot to be happy and thankful for now because she has 2 families that love her. She agreed and said she got upset mostly because mommy was crying while they were watching, and that she just missed being young again (she was around 5 in the video).

I understand it's important for the children to not block out memories of what their life used to be, but at the same time I can't help but feel like BM showed the videos to the kids to intentionally upset them (she recently found that I am pregnant with our first child and is not taking it well at all). DH and I agreed that this seems like her attempt at keeping the skids from being happy about the new baby/our family in general.

My question is...are DH and I crazy? Is it healthy for BM to be watching home videos of them being a family together with her children and CRYING while doing so? Or am I correct in feeling like this could be a form of emotional abuse?

Philly officer caught on video hitting woman

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Police have launched an internal investigation after a video was posted online that shows an officer striking a woman twice in the face at a neighborhood party associated with Philadelphia's annual Puerto Rican Day parade. The 36-second video uploaded to YouTube and titled "Philadelphia Police Brutality" shows the woman crumpling to the ground after being struck Sunday in north Philadelphia. The woman appears to be bleeding from the mouth as she is led away in handcuffs.

Moments before the woman was hit, the video shows someone else throwing a liquid toward the officers. The woman was also seen spraying something from a can.

The woman, whose name was not released, was cited for disorderly conduct, said Officer Tanya Little, a police spokeswoman.

The officer in the video, identified as highway patrol supervisor Lt. Jonathan Josey, is eager to tell his side of the story to internal investigators because there is more to what happened than the video shows, said John McNesby, president of the Fraternal Order of Police.

"We're hoping that it's neither a whitewash nor a witch hunt," McNesby said at a news conference Monday. "At the end of the day, his actions will be questioned, but I believe they can be defended."

The daylong neighborhood party is largely attended by a different group from those who are at an earlier downtown parade, he said.

"There's a lot of tensions that are running high; there's a lot of arrests that are made," McNesby said. "Each year people are arrested, and things aren't pretty."

McNesby said that from what he understands about how things unfolded, police were trying to stop a driver who was "doing 360s" in the road.

"A guy was spinning wheels and burning tires in the middle of the (road), police are trying to stop it and ... as we're doing it, things are being thrown, liquids are being tossed" at the officers by several people, he said.

McNesby said officers during such instances don't know whether what's being thrown on them is simply water, or whether it's urine or chemicals, as has happened in the past.

"It's great to sit back and read it online and look at video and second-guess yourself and Monday morning quarterback," he said, "but again at the end of the day, we don't know what's coming at us."

Toronto stocks head higher as U.S. manufacturing data boosts ...

TORONTO ? The Toronto stock market closed the session in positive territory on Monday, but well off earlier gains, as trader sentiment improved on good manufacturing numbers out of the U.S.

Here are the closing numbers

TSX ? 12,370.19 +52.73 +0.43%

S&P 500 ? 1,444.49 +3.82 +0.27%

Dow ? 13,515.11 +77.98 +0.58%

Nasdaq ? 3,113.53 -2.70 -0.09%

The S&P/TSX composite index ended ahead 52.73 points to 12,370.19 on the first trading day of the fourth quarter. The main index had moved as much as 135 points higher earlier in the session.

The TSX Venture Exchange crept up 4.19 points to 1,338.70, and the Canadian dollar gained 0.05 of a cent to 101.76 cents US.

Ben Bernanke defended the Fed?s moves to stimulate the economy in a speech to the Economic Club of Indiana in Indianapolis. He said the Fed?s strategy remains the same, and that it needs to drive down borrowing rates because the economy isn?t growing fast enough to reduce high unemployment.

The state of the U.S. economy has been a persistent concern, though the latest data from the Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of U.S. purchasing managers, offered a little relief. The index of factory activity rose to 51.5 in September, up from 49.6 in August. A reading above 50 signals expansion and below indicates contraction.

?You are going to see some signs of encouragement from that, but at the same time exports are still shrinking,? said Gavin Graham, president of Graham Investment Strategy Ltd.

China?s Purchasing Managers? Index for September came in at 49.8, marking a further contraction in activity in the region. Meanwhile, the eurozone?s manufacturing sector experienced a better month, though its September PMI still contracted for the 14th consecutive month.

?If the weakness in China and Europe continues, those are major markets for the U.S., it?s going to be difficult for it to disclose strength,? Graham added.

Also, the results of an independent audit of 14 Spanish banks were released after the market close on Friday and showed lenders need an extra 60-billion euros in capital. The figure is roughly as expected and well within the 100-billion euros in rescue loans that Madrid can get from fellow eurozone countries to help the banks.

But there were still concerns that Moody?s ratings agency could downgrade Spain?s debt rating to junk status.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrials rose 77.98 points to 13,515.11. The Nasdaq composite index slid 2.70 points to 3,113.53 and the S&P 500 index was up 3.82 points to 1,444.49.

In commodities, November crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange gained 29 cents to US$92.48 a barrel. The TSX energy sector was up 1.3%.

The gold sector moved higher as December gold bullion increased $9.40 to US$1,783.30 an ounce, while December copper was up 2.8 cents at US$3.79 a pound.

In Canadian corporate developments, Magna International Inc. said it has signed a deal to buy Ixetic Verwaltungs GmbH, a manufacturer of automotive vacuum, engine and transmission pumps for $308-million. The company also said a subsidiary has signed a deal with a joint-venture partner to buy the remaining 50% stake in STT Technologies, a supplier of transmission and engine oil pumps. Shares of Magna rose 1.8%, or 76 cents, to $43.27.

Wi-LAN Inc. said it has bought a portfolio of more than 150 patents and patent applications from Alvarion Ltd. for $19-million. Its shares were down two cents to $5.51.

Agrium Inc. shares rose nearly 1.7% to $103.69 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In New York, the stock shot up 2.1% to US$105.53. An investor pushing for changes at Agrium laid out its case publicly for the first time on Monday, arguing it could add US$50 to the Canadian fertilizer company?s share price.

And two Canadian companies made changes to their top positions.

Molson Coors Brewing Co. appointed a new chief executive to head its Canadian operations while merging its U.K. business with the recently acquired StarBev. Its shares were off 5%, or $2.45, at $42.55.

SNC-Lavalin?s chief executive made his first speech while in the new role. Robert Card said he is keeping all options open as he looks to regain investor confidence in the embattled engineering and construction company. Shares fell 35 cents to $37.60.
